Long Story Short
– No great skill or knowledge is needed to be super fit. You need to keep Showing Up
– You do have the motivation, courage and patience because you’ve shown it before. You need to reduce Domain Dependence, where you show your capabilities in one area of life but don’t transfer them over to others.
I’m willing to bet that if you look back at everything you said you would do, between the decision and now, are the words “I can’t”.
However you paint the reasons, excuses, obstacles and ultimately the failure, at some point in there, you said “I can’t.”
The thing that stops most people from achieving their goals isn’t knowledge or being able to access the magic potion that every successful person has. The problem is not having enough self-belief to carry through with your promises to yourself.
So how do we get it?
How do overcome the crippling doubt that we have enough skill or talent to get the job done?
There are really two things you need to do.
1) Keep Showing Up, implementing the basics required to achieve your goal for long enough for it all to come to fruition
Unless you want to fly a rocket to the moon or win the Olympics, the chances are that there isn’t some magic, elite level skill you need to acquire on your way to success.
Fat loss, muscle building, becoming a better runner…they are all things that require basic things to be done on a daily or weekly basis.
You know how to put food in your mouth, you just need it to be the right quality in the right quantity.
You know how to drink water.
You know how to put your head on a pillow before 10pm
You know how to put one foot in front of the other and go for a walk or a run.
Imagine if you did all that for 12 weeks non-stop! You’d be lean and mean in no time. No great skill is required but if you don’t do it for long enough, you won’t see the results you want.
That’s what Dinarte here did over a few years!
In The Secrets of Showing Up, I’ve laid out everything you need to do for 12 weeks to get the best results you’ve ever had. Beyond that, it’s on you to find the reason to keep doing it consistently.
2) Reduce ‘Domain Dependence’
That brings us back to the belief that “I can’t”. You may well already have all the information and action steps you need but you don’t believe you have the commitment, energy, persistence or motivation.
I personally guarantee that you do.
In other domain of your life, you have already shown it right?
Maybe you made it through 14 years of schooling, possibly with 3 years of university study on top. You kept going when you bored, tired and confused.
Maybe you’ve risen through the ranks in your career, You started doing things you didn’t want to do forever, watching others operating at a higher level. You didn’t want to stay at the bottom so you kept showing up for work, keeping an eye out for opportunities and took them when they came.
Maybe you didn’t think you could be a mother. You did it because you gave yourself no other choice and learned along the way.
You can take belief from ANY area of your life that shows you do have the patience, drive and determination to do something. This is how you remove Domain Dependence where you have belief and passion in one area of life but struggling to find it in another.
Much of this comes down to finding the ‘Why’ behind what you do. When it comes to work and kids, you know exactly why you need to do it unless you’re happy having no roof over your head or something bad happening to your family.
Find that ‘Why’ when it comes to your health and fitness.
Living longer, living better, being more productive, having more sex, completing personal challenges, having more energy for yourself and others…there are a million things fitness does for you. It’s up to you to find the ones that really grab you and make mission healthy meals and workouts as unacceptable as losing your job or forgetting to feed your children!
Find out what you need to do, keep Showing Up, and reduce Domain Dependence in your thinking about what you’re capable of!
KEY TASK: Every time you tell yourself you can’t, ask yourself when you’ve shown that you CAN and that you do have what it takes!
